The Institut d'Histoire Sociale was founded by Boris Souvarine in 1937. Looted during World War Two, its collections on the history of communism, socialism and trade unionism were reconstituted little by little. Today the IHS owns about 40.000 books, 1000 periodicals, brochures and archives.
Bequeathed to the Archives départementales of the Hauts-de-Seine in 1992, these collections are still handled by the IHS, a 1901 association. On top of running the library, the IHS organizes debates and symposiums on a regular basis. It also publishes a magazine "Histoire et Liberté". The director of the IHS is Pierre Rigoulot.
